How do Odds Work in the Euros?

If you’ve never bet on soccer before, we’ve provided a European Championship betting example below. You can also see how sports odds work in more depth on our dedicated guide.

Spain
Spain
2.38
Draw
3.00
France
France
2.80

Spain are the slight favourites here, as they have lower odds. If you bet C$10 for them to win, then you would make C$13.80 profit and a total returns of C$23.80 with your stake back. If you fancy France, meanwhile, you’d get C$18 profit from a C$10 wager. Making your returns C$28.

Draws or ties in the regulation 90 minutes happen in soccer often. European Championship odds are no different in this respect. Backing a draw between Spain and France here would yield C$20 of profit from a C$10 stake, with the return being C$30.

Odds can be expressed as decimals like the above examples, or the British way using fractions. In Canada, the American moneyline style with a plus or minus sign next to the price is also popular. See how these compare by using our Euros odds calculator:

European Championship Betting Options

There are plenty of betting odds available before and during the event. Here are some of the most popular European Championship football odds from the game and futures markets:

Euros Game Bets

  • Game Result

    Game Result

This is betting on soccer in its most basic form, simply who will win a game? There are three possible outcomes: either team to win or the game is a draw.

In the case of Euro 2020 winner odds for a group or knockout stage game, this market is for the result after 90 minutes. Not considering what happens in extra-time.

    Eg: France to win

    2.80
    french flag
  • Goalscorer Markets

    Goalscorer Markets

You can bet on individual soccer players to go score a goal. The range of markets for this include anytime goalscorer, first, last or next goalscorer, and to score two or more.

There are even Euro 2020 futures markets on who will score the most goals across the tournament.

    Eg: Harry Kane
    to score first
    3.25
    Harry Kane
  • Correct Score

    Correct Score

If you have a feeling you know what the exact final result will be after the regulation 90 minutes are up, then this market can be very rewarding.

Usually, the betting odds will be more profitable for scorelines with a higher number of goals. Such as 4-1 or 3-3.

    Eg:
    France
    France
    vs
    3 - 2
    11.00
    Spain
    Spain
  • Spread Betting

    Spread Betting

Sometimes, European Championship games put two teams against each other where one is clearly superior in the regular match result market, but value can still be found elsewhere.

For Euro 2020 spread betting, sportsbooks create margins to handicap the favourites. These are imagined goal deficits for them to overcome, or goal advantages for the underdogs to hang onto.

    Eg:
    England
    with
    -1.5 goals
    8.50
    England
    Scotland
    with
    +3.5 goals
    2.75
    Scotland
  • Match Result and Both Teams to Score

Match Result and Both Teams to Score

Another way of enhancing regular match result betting is to look at whether both teams will score a goal too.

It’s ‘Yes’ or ‘No’, combined with choosing one country to win or to back a draw/tie.

    Eg:
    England win
    and both teams to score
    4.33
    England

Euro 2020 Futures Bets

  • Outright Winner

    Outright Winner

You can bet on who will win the Euros at pretty much any time throughout the four years (five for Euro 2020) leading up to the competition.

Outright Euro 2020 winner odds are the most popular, and easiest to place too. Each sports betting site will simply have a list of the 24 countries in favourite order. These odds will usually get lower as the tournament progresses.

    Eg:
    Italy outright
    17.00
    Italy
  • Stage of Elimination

    Stage of Elimination

Once all 24 European Championship finals qualifiers are known and when the draw is made, another popular futures market is Stage of Elimination.

This is the point in the tournament finals where a country goes out. It can be anywhere from the group stage or quarter-finals to all the way to the final.

    Eg: Portugal in the
    quarter-finals
    7.00
    Portugal
  • To Qualify

    To Qualify

A wager to qualify can mean a few different options relating to European Championship betting.

It could be to reach the tournament finals, advance from a Euro 2020 group, or progress from a play-off or knockout phase game.

    Eg: the Netherlands
    to qualify for the finals
    5.00
    Netherlands

Our Expert Euro 2020 Predictions

Based on the above European Championship winner market, we’ve provided our own expert Euro 2020 predictions and picks:

Portugal to be outright winners is a great shout at 11.00. With global superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, and in-form players Bruno Fernandes, Rúben Dias and João Félix in their team, they’ll be confident of becoming just the second nation to defend the Euros.

Germany each-way at 9.00 is also very tempting. Their manager Joachim Löw is stepping down after Euro 2020, so will be keen to add the title to his 2014 World Cup and 2017 Confederations Cup collection after being runners-up in 2008.

Down at 33.00 in the outright market, backing Croatia to reach the semi-finals seems very tempting. Croatia are one of football’s biggest overachievers, with a population of just 4 million. They were even runners-up at the 2018 World Cup.

As for top Euro 2020 goalscorers, the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Robert Lewandowski and Euro 2016 top scorer Antoine Griezmann will all be high up in the market. But our pick is 2018 World Cup Golden Boot winner Harry Kane, with his team England being the favourites.

Euro 2020 Betting Tips

1
Place Futures Bets Early

Popular Euro 2020 futures bets such as Outright Winner, Top Goalscorer and Stage of Elimination etc will usually have longer odds for each team or player before the tournament kicks off.

So, if you fancy a bet, we recommend placing a wager as soon as you can in order to potentially reap more rewards. As the tournament progresses, countries will be eliminated, meaning the remaining teams’ odds will get shorter and less profitable.

2
Take Advantage of Bonuses/Specials

Sports betting sites will be offering bonuses and promotions galore during Euro 2020 to try and entice new customers and reward regular players.

In particular, look out for no deposit bonuses and other free bets, where you can place bets without risking spending your real money. There will be enhanced odds specials too on certain markets.

3
Back an Outsider to Go Far

The European Championship has had its fair share of surprises over its 15 editions to date. Previous champions Czechoslovakia (1976), Denmark (1992) and Greece (2008) were seen as shock winners at the time.

Relative outsiders have also reached the latter stages, such as Wales to the semi-finals in 2016. Therefore, backing another underdog in the Each-way or Stage of Elimination markets are worth a shout.

4
Avoid Being Sentimental

It’s always tempting to back a country that has your favourite player, or where you may have ties to, but it is best to forget all allegiances you have and study form and stats instead.

For example, while Gareth Bale is one of the world’s best players, his nation Wales are big outsiders and unlikely to reach the latter stages (again). So, backing him to be Top Goalscorer would be very risky.

What is the UEFA European Championship?

Better known as the Euros, the European Championship is an international soccer group and knockout tournament held every four years featuring all 55 UEFA member associations.

Qualifying reduces those to 24 for the tournament finals, which is usually held in one or two nations. Euro 2020 is the exception, as it will see 12 hosting countries.
